The Richmond Rumpus - Duke's Bones (band)
The music of Duke Ellington is like no other. Having composed over 3000 songs, over five decades. Ellington’s music is woven into the fabric of our nation. Richmond Rumpus is an Ellington only repertoire band that prides itself in playing the full range of music from Ellington’s career. Additionally, the band is available in nearly any configuration; from an intimate duet setting of trombone/guitar to a full size 15-piece big band. Pending availability, the addition of a vocalist is a very popular option as well.
Duke's Bones is one such line-up of The Richmond Rumpus. According to Art Baron, trombonist with the Duke Ellington Orchestra, there were times when musicians were late for the gig. Ellington would say, "If the trombone section is here, then let's get started." I've always wondered what Duke would have performed with only a trombone and rhythm section. And now, you can find out! Comprised of 4 trombonists, piano, bass, and drums, you can hire my person favorite Richmond Rumpus line-up.
The following audio sample was recorded by me and me alone, but then, it was the pandemic at it's peak and I had nothing better to do. You'll just have to imagine a full rhythm section instead of my less than stellar tambourine, wood block, and iron skillet substitute instrumentation.
A typical performance consists of three 50-minute sets with two 15-minute intermissions. Richmond, Virginia area performances are priced at $150 per musician. For booking arrangements and other inquiries, contact Pete Anderson via email [email protected].
