The exciting table-top game, akin to dominoes, that is not only fun, but also a great music-education resource.

objective: The first player to score 50 points wins the game.

number of players: 2 - 4

getting started:

  • Use any table surface on which to play.
  • Each player draws 3 chord tiles and 7 note tiles.
  • The tallest player goes first.
  • The order of players is counterclockwise.

general rules:

  • To play a chord, you must use a minimum of the “root”, “3rd” and “5th”.
  • All chords must be formed in root position and in order without skipping any notes of the chord. (see Example #1)
  • Chords are played in the upward direction or to the right.
  • If no play can be made, then the player may either: (1) draw one more chord tile and two more note tiles or (2) evenly exchange any number of tiles
  • If a play is made, then the player replaces the same number of tiles used.
  • Once a note tile has been played, the side facing up is the only way the note may be used. (E is not the same as Fb) (see Example #4)
  • Roots (chord tiles) may be used as chord tones if the chord is diatonic. (see Example #3)
  • The extensions of the diatonic chord tile supersede the original root chord tile.

Chord extensions:

  • For the purpose of this game, an extension to a chord will be considered as the “7th” or higher and must be played in order. (see Example #3)
  • Each player may use the chord extension rule sheet to assist in adding notes to a chord.
  • Only the extensions listed on the extension rule sheet may be used unless all players agree to a different method of adding extensions to a chord prior to the start of the game.

Scoring:

  • Chord tiles = 1 point each
  • note tiles used as the “3rd” and “5th” of a chord = 2 points each
  • extensions = 3 points each
